Collateral Consequences

Obama administration handles Putin and Ukraine threat and unrest exactly the same way it handles corporate white-collar crime in the US: avoid prosecutions of corporations whose collapse (it is claimed) might disrupt world economies. Militarily, the idea is to avoid wars that could be politically embarrassing and costly in manpower, resources and votes. Obama's admin is afraid of the battlefield as much as the courtroom: US foreign policy and its national security interests is decided by corporate lawyers using cost-benefit analysis and risk management algorithms. The Obama Doctrine of Deterrence articulates economy-saving, situational leniency and a bottom-line strategy: "Economic sanctions" are the new "military deterrent" of choice allowing the CEO-in-Chief to defer prosecution of foreign policy from a foxhole on Wall Street.
