An overused word I hate to see in print or hear in a speech: CHALLENGE(s). Back in the ‘70’s, hip self-help new-age gurus of personal transformation decided that the word “problem” was counterintuitive. They replaced it with the word “CHALLENGE” to convey the idea of life as a win-win game instead of a this-or-that or a you-or-me, instead of life being “Stop!” it was “Go!” Realities like poverty, hunger, war, unemployment, crime, racism, education, climate, terrorism, health care, economics, injustice….. they’re not “problems” to solve, they’re “challenges” to face. They’re not IMportunities, they’re OPportunities. Problems still need to be solved, but now we can feel good about it.
